How to research a masters degree in China

Choose the kind of study you need

Start by writing what you want to be able to do after the degree. Turn that into questions about curriculum and assessment: which subjects need deeper study, which research methods matter, and what kind of final project would demonstrate progress? This makes it easier to distinguish an attractive programme title from a degree that serves your actual objective.

Then identify your applicant stage. A recent graduate investigating a management masters and an experienced professional comparing MBAs should not use the same shortlist criteria. Tsinghua's SEM notices explicitly separate pre-experience masters from MBA routes. A programme's brand does not remove that distinction.

Read sources in the right order

Begin with the international graduate admissions notice to understand the general process. Open the official catalogue next to identify the exact school and programme. Finally, look for a departmental or programme-specific notice. Save all three when they contribute different requirements.

When dates or instructions appear to differ, check whether the pages address the same intake and applicant category. PKU's verified central 2026 notice directs applicants to separate English-taught programme guides for their application arrangements. That is an instruction to investigate the programme, not a reason to copy the central deadline into every row.

• Use the official programme name and code where published.
• Identify whether the campus and school match the degree you intend.
• Record language and study mode explicitly.
• Distinguish published requirements from questions still awaiting an answer.

Prepare an evidence plan

Build a small matrix connecting each requirement to a document, its owner and the time needed to obtain it. An academic transcript may be easy to download, while authentication, translation or recommendation arrangements can require more coordination. The Tsinghua and PKU notices both make degree documentation part of the process.

Your statement should explain a coherent reason for this specific course of study. As a planning exercise, connect one academic or professional experience to a question you want to pursue and then to a feature of the programme. This is an editorial method for making your reasoning clear, not a published admissions scoring formula.

Check language and supervisor rules individually

Do not import a language threshold from another school just because the degree titles resemble each other. Record the permitted test, score, validity rules and any stated exemption process directly from the relevant notice. A waiver request and an approved waiver are different application states.

The same care applies to contacting supervisors. Zhejiang's inspected guide describes provisional acceptance where applicable. That does not establish a requirement for every masters degree in China. First establish whether the programme expects supervisor contact; only then plan a relevant academic inquiry.

Keep a realistic application calendar

Separate university deadlines from your own completion targets. Add scholarship steps only after finding their official rules; scholarship consideration should not be assumed to follow automatically from admission. For a programme with rounds, compare how each round fits the arrival of your evidence rather than simply choosing the latest date.
