Choosing admissions support

How to choose a China admissions consultant

Start with the help you need, then compare the person, work and evidence behind each offer. A useful consultation should leave you clearer about your application and the unresolved questions. Use the accompanying worksheet to record answers before deciding whether paid support is worthwhile.

What to know first

  • Compare the same programme, intake and deliverables across providers.
  • Ask who will do the work and how their recommendations are funded.
  • Keep access to your accounts, documents and final application.

1. Which application route suits the help you need?

Applying directly, using an application platform and hiring a private adviser solve different problems. Compare their actual responsibilities before comparing prices. The categories can overlap, so a provider’s label tells you less than its written scope.

  • Direct application: consider this if you can research programmes, interpret instructions and coordinate your materials. Identify questions that need an answer from the university.
  • Application platform: examine which institutions and programmes it covers, what application coordination includes and which tasks remain yours.
  • Private adviser: consider whether individual planning, materials feedback or interview preparation addresses a specific need. Check exactly which of these services the agreement includes.

2. Does the proposed shortlist fit your programme and intake?

Ask for the reasoning behind each recommendation: academic fit, teaching language, eligibility and your objectives. A university name alone is too broad. Undergraduate and master’s applications need different research, and requirements can differ between programmes within one institution.

Request the exact official source and intake for each important requirement. Tsinghua’s undergraduate procedures and 2027 graduate notice are separate references. The PKU central graduate source linked here covers 2026; it is a previous-cycle reference, not confirmation of later requirements. Ask the adviser to label unresolved points and explain how they will check them.

3. Who will actually advise you?

Request the assigned adviser’s name, role and relevant experience before payment. Ask who researches the shortlist, reviews documents and conducts any interview practice. A founder’s biography does not establish who will read your work. Clarify what happens if the proposed adviser changes, and whether additional specialists would cost extra.

4. What work will be delivered?

Turn broad promises such as ‘full support’ into a written list: programmes covered, planning sessions, documents, review rounds, submission checks and any interview preparation. Specify what you must prepare and what the adviser will provide. Ask how an extra programme or a major change of direction would affect scope and price.

5. How will feedback and communication work?

Ask for the working rhythm, communication channel and expected response times. For document support, distinguish comments on an applicant’s draft from more involved document development. Confirm the languages covered and how revisions are handled. A sample process or blank feedback template can make the offer easier to understand without exposing another applicant’s private work.

6. What could you pay, and under what terms?

Request an itemised quote separating advisory fees from university charges, testing, translations and other document costs. Confirm currency, payment stages and any optional charges. Read the written cancellation and refund terms before paying, including what happens if your plans change or a programme becomes unsuitable. Compare the same scope across quotes; a headline price may cover different work.

7. Are recommendations affected by financial incentives?

Ask whether the provider receives commissions, referral fees or other benefits from institutions or services it recommends. Request disclosure of which recommendations involve an incentive and whether alternatives outside those relationships are considered. An incentive does not by itself establish poor advice, but understanding it helps you assess the shortlist. Record an unanswered question as unresolved rather than assuming there is no arrangement.

8. What does a claimed university relationship mean?

If a provider claims an official partnership or representative role, ask for evidence of its current scope and a way to verify it with the institution. Studying at a university is different from representing its admissions office. Treat personal credentials, institutional relationships and authority over admissions decisions as separate claims.

9. Who controls the application and documents?

Agree how you will access application accounts, receive university messages and review submissions. Establish who can upload or change materials, how final approval works and how documents are returned or removed when the engagement ends. You should be able to inspect the final application and confirm that its facts accurately represent you.

10. What does the provider’s evidence actually show?

For an outcome example, ask about the year, programme, applicant’s starting position and the work provided. An admission offer alone does not show what caused the result or predict yours. Look for evidence relevant to your route and specific descriptions of the service. Ask how testimonials or anonymised examples were authorised; you do not need another student’s passport, grades or private correspondence to assess a provider.

How to use this checklist with Agora

Agora Scholars publishes this guide and provides private admissions advice. It is a provider’s checklist, not an independent ranking. Agora’s agreed support can include programme planning, application materials feedback and coordination. Interview preparation and other services depend on the agreement. For a master’s route, confirm programme fit and relevant adviser expertise before agreeing to support.

Ask Agora the same questions, including fees and incentives. Put the answers in the worksheet and resolve material gaps before payment. Universities and scholarship bodies make their own decisions.

Questions applicants ask

How should I compare two advisers?

Give both the same programme brief and request written answers to the worksheet. Compare relevant expertise, responsibilities, evidence and total scope before price.
