International admissions

China undergraduate admissions for international students

An international undergraduate application to China starts with choosing the correct applicant route and teaching language. University names come after those decisions. This guide shows how to build a shortlist that you can actually apply to, using selected official university sources checked on 7 October 2026.

Application planning · Intake varies by programme

What to know first

  • Separate English-taught, Chinese-taught and bilingual programmes.
  • Check the specific international applicant route before using an admissions calendar.
  • Selected sources cover different intakes; a 2026 notice is not a 2027 deadline.

Start with three questions

First, which applicant category will the university use for you? Second, which language can you use for demanding academic work? Third, which school qualification and examinations will support your application? Write those answers before comparing programme names. They determine which notices are relevant.

A foreign passport should not be treated as the whole nationality review. Tsinghua's current undergraduate instructions link additional nationality documentation. If your circumstances involve previous Chinese nationality or Chinese parents, collect the facts and read the university's exact instructions early. Do not base a long application plan on an assumption about eligibility.

Make a shortlist of routes, not just universities

Give each candidate programme its own row. An English-taught degree and a bilingual degree at the same university can create very different preparation needs. A student who can discuss a subject in conversational Chinese may still need substantial work before reading specialist texts or writing examinations in Chinese.

Use language as a practical academic decision as well as an application requirement. Compare the language of teaching, assessed work and required evidence separately. Where a page is unclear, record the question rather than assuming that an English admissions webpage describes an English-taught degree.

  • Record the official programme name, degree level and campus.
  • Save the exact admissions notice and its intake.
  • Separate language test evidence from school examination results.
  • Record unanswered questions before treating a programme as a realistic option.

Understand what an examination route changes

Peking University's verified 2026 notices distinguish a written-examination route from a route based on qualifying standardized results. The latter still includes later assessment. This is a useful example of why “without written examination” should not be read as “without selection.” Current-cycle details must be checked before using either route.

Build your preparation around the next actual assessment. Written-subject practice, explaining an academic interest and organizing qualification evidence are different tasks. A good application schedule identifies which one matters for each programme instead of giving every school the same document checklist.

Work backwards from verified requirements

Create a calendar only after finding the right intake notice. Give yourself internal dates for receiving transcripts, checking translations, obtaining any required test results and reviewing the final application. Those are planning targets you control; label them separately from university deadlines.

For example, if a needed result will arrive late, investigate the university's own rules for pending qualifications before scheduling submission. Do not assume a later round, an email attachment or a provisional result will be accepted. If the rule is not published, the admissions office is the appropriate place to confirm it.

Use the directory with its coverage limits

The selected source set includes Tsinghua, Peking, Fudan and Shanghai Jiao Tong. Fudan's international hub and SJTU's catalogue are useful next steps for expanding a shortlist, but this guide does not verify every programme at those institutions.

You should finish your first research session with a manageable shortlist and a short list of unresolved eligibility questions. That is a stronger starting point for discussing application support than a long ranking list with no confirmed application routes.

Questions applicants ask

Is there one application deadline for universities in China?

No single deadline is established by these sources. Use the specific university, programme, applicant route and intake notice.

Does an English admissions website mean the degree is taught in English?

No. Check the programme’s explicit teaching-language statement; an admissions page can be in English while the degree is Chinese-taught or bilingual.

Does this directory include every undergraduate programme?

No. It covers selected verified routes and official catalogue entrypoints, with coverage status shown.
